Dating in College: The Characteristics of the Ideal Partner

College life isn’t just about hitting the books and making the grade. It’s about socializing, having new experiences and broadening your horizons by meeting different people from all walks of life. Dating during college can be challenging but it doesn’t have to be impossible.

Below are some major characteristics students should be on the lookout for when it comes to dating on-campus.

He/She is Goal-Oriented & Ambitious
College is full of slackers but if you’re the type of person that is goal-oriented, has a plan and is good about taking action, then you’ll definitely want to seek the same in a potential partner. Weed out the duds and focus on people in your life that exhibit the same drive and ambition you have. Dating someone that has goals and a plan to execute them is a lifestyle that will carry over even after graduation, which is very appealing for students that want a stable, long-term relationship after they’ve left school.

He/She Has Interests Outside of School
There’s nothing wrong with being a bookworm but if you’ve had yet to take risks and go off-campus to explore, take advantage of the opportunity. Better yet find someone to do it with you. What better way to enjoy a new experience than with someone by your side that is interested in seeing what there is to get into outside of school? Whether it’s hiking, sightseeing, checking out the hole-in-the-wall restaurants or taking road trips together, such activities are a wonderful way to create memories that aren’t just filled with academic studies and related events.

He/She Has Priorities
College is a combination of work and play but it is crucial that the person you’re dating knows where to draw the line. If you’re already disciplined in this respect, then that’s great but when paired with someone that’s a bit of a slacker or procrastinator, it could make for a bad influence. Find someone that has no problem knowing when to focus on studying and when to go out and throw caution to the wind. If you both possess this quality, it will only help you better one another.

He/She Wants to Graduate
It may sound silly but there are many college students that have no problem taking their sweet time. Some take the minimum course load, while others end up being stuck as 2-3 year seniors. Students hoping to start a career and eventually settle down with their partner will have an easier time doing so if the person they’re dating is on track academically to graduate. While you both don’t have to graduate at the same time, it is helpful to know that the two of you will be able to pursue your long-term goals together, instead of waiting around for him/her to get his/her act together.

He/She Knows When to Focus on You
The ideal person to date while in college is one that knows when it should be about the books and when it should be about the significant other. Nothing’s better than having someone you can turn to when you’re stressed out, exhausted from burning the candle at both ends or simply want to have fun with. Finding a person that is attentive to your needs and willing to accommodate you into his/her busy schedule can make all the difference in your relationship and where it goes after college.
